7 Summer Home Renovations You Won't Want to Ignore

When you think about summer, do you think about lemonade, fireflies and cookouts? What about a reading a good book in the sunshine, while relaxing in the hammock?

Summer brings simple pleasures with long days. You want to make the most of the season, and there are incredible home renovations that will make your summer even more special.

1. Hangout in the Hammock

You’ve just started on your summer reading list and decided that you’ll be spending a good deal of your time reading in the shade. What better place to relax and read in a hammock?

Though beautiful, strong oak trees are ideal to hang a hammock from, you don’t need trees to hang your hammock. All you need are two strong supports which are erected specifically for the hammock, or are temporary set ups. A hammock strung between sturdy porch posts or between buildings work.

Pick a nice shady spot, or a day with cloud cover and a great breeze. String up your hammock, and enjoy your book! Relax your body, get your time in the sun, and stimulate your mind.

2. Build a New Walkway

Imagine guests thinking they’ve wandered into a whole new world with a rustic stone walkway. It’s easy to build a flagstone path, whether it’s to your doorstep or to your fairy garden.

Create a guided tour with your path to the most beautiful areas of the place you call home. Construct a spiral pebble mosaic as a whimsical and unexpected focal point with your path.

3. Install a New Front Door

A front door is the gateway into your home, from which you welcome your guests. It’s important that your front door reflect the aesthetic of your home. If your home is older and historical, it’s vital that you recognize when it’s time to replace your front door to keep up your residence.

Upgrade your front door to let in new light, or you might choose a door that is yellow or red to feel more welcoming in the neighborhood. Entryways are symbolic as to how we pass through thresholds and enter into new identities or realizations. Update your front door and so much more, all with one renovation.

4. Reflect Rainbows Into Your Home

Is the sunlight too bright in your home, or does the house tend to feel too dark? Fix the light issue with a whole spectrum of colors to improve the mood. There are many colorful ways to welcome the sunshine into your home:

  • Stained glass windows add simple elegance. Consider adding a stained glass window above your front door to welcome guests and reflect colorful rays of light. Replace western facing windows to highlight a sunset, or replace eastern facing windows for a more welcome wake up. If your windows are letting a lot of heat out, it may be time to buy some news ones. Do your research and compare window prices on online websites to help get the cheapest quote possible.
  • Faux stained glass is affordable, artistic and attractive. DIY mock stained glass with a little glass paint and metal strips. Go for quality glass paint and apply in thick coats for the most real look. Mirror hanging kits help secure your finished piece of art!
  • Hang glass prisms in windows to catch rainbows! Collect small glass prism charms and colorful beads, and string them together to make into window charms. Hang one from a western facing window to catch the sunset and create rainbows in your home.

5. Build a Garden Labyrinth

Cultivate a place for sacred healing in your own backyard by building a garden labyrinth. A labyrinth is a spiraling, circular path, which may be small or large, that you take time to walk inward until you reach the very center. You then return from once you came. It’s a beautiful metaphor, which is a real walking meditation.

Garden labyrinths may be created with any plants, stones or natural objects, and they are as simple or difficult as you want to make them. Your labyrinth will be a healing place of beauty and respite.

6. Cultivate a Potted Plant Garden

Does your green thumb have the kiss of death? Don’t have time to garden, as much as you’d really like to have your own garden?

Focus on potted plants you can’t kill, if you enjoy plants but don’t have the time to physically plant and maintain a garden. Water the plants every few days, and change the pot as each plant gets bigger. It’s important your physical health to be around nature and to nurture something more than your career and something outside of yourself and family.

7. Upgrade your Bedroom.

You spend at least a third of your life sleeping. It’s important to your health that you are well rested.

Invest in a king size mattress suited to your sleep needs, whether that’s firm, soft, or adjustable depending on your mood. Get the fluffiest pillows. If you need five pillows to sleep with, obtain those five pillows at all costs.

Repaint the walls to a natural green or tan, or choose blue for serenity. Upcycle a piece of old furniture. Create a bedroom that allows you to get the rest you deserve.

There are certain home renovations you simply can’t ignore because they’re too important to your sanity and comfort. A few simple changes make the biggest differences.

Is there a better way to enjoy a good book outdoors, other than swaying in a hammock? Bring new light into your life by capturing rainbows with glass window charms and installing stained glass windows. Make little changes step by step to reap big rewards with a beautiful home suited to your personality and aesthetic.
