The Power of Your “Why”

The Power of Your Why

Are you striving to accomplish a goal? May I ask why? I do not mean to pry and impose, and I am certainly not being nosy. The reason I ask is because the “why” is the critical piece in your endeavor to successfully accomplish your goals.

We all have goals. They come in all shapes and sizes and weave their way through all the areas of our lives. They may take the form of a daily to-do list, or maybe you are striving to accomplish one main goal. Your goal may be to lose 10 pounds, maybe it is to lose 100 pounds. Nevertheless, you have decided “what” you want to do. You have even come up with a specific plan – the “how” is taken care of. But have you invested the time to think of the “why” – truly thought about it?

Frederick Nietzsche, a German poet and philosopher said, “He who has a big enough why to live for can bear almost any how.”

There is so much truth in that statement! When I reflect on it, a story of survival comes to my mind – the true-life story of Aron Ralston, a twenty-seven-year-old mountaineer and outdoorsman, who cut off his own right arm to free himself from an 800-pound rock that had fallen on his arm while on a hike in the Utah Canyonlands.

There is no question in my mind that Aron Ralston must have had a big enough “why” that day; powerful reasons that inspired his act of unimaginable bravery. Few of us will be faced with such desperate life situations with such a dramatic outcome, yet we all have our own instances of victory. Each of those victories should be celebrated. They should be built upon and before you know it you will be stretching yourself to greater and greater heights of accomplishment.

I feel confident saying that the successes you have had in accomplishing things in your life happened when your desire outmatched the obstacles, fears and excuses that came your way.  Am I right? You were in a place where there was power in your “why.”

There is excitement and hope when you come to this realization. Your past successes reveal that you have the capability. You are more than capable no matter what the task! So, if you are struggling to accomplish something right now, take a step back and reflect on the reasons why you have this goal in the first place. Press yourself, think deeply, and paint a clear and vivid picture so that the reason or reasons for your goal conjure up powerful emotions in you. Is there awe and scare attached to your goal? Do you feel a fire within you – smoldering brightly and hard to contain? Answer yes to that question and you are on the right path to success!

I encourage you to spend the time to uncover your “why” because this is the place where magic can happen! The time you will invest to uncover your deep-rooted reasons for your goals is invaluable. It is key to your success in accomplishing all you are striving for!

I have found that writing your goals down with all the reasons why you want to accomplish them is imperative to your success. That step of taking the time to put it down in writing solidifies it in my mind. Make sure you have quick and regular access to your goals. I take the extra step of finding pictures that correspond to my goals. They are scattered all over my home and are close at hand downloaded on my devices. These visual reminders are great motivation.

Whatever your goal maybe there is a reason why you are driven to accomplish it. Embrace these reasons for continued success. If you are on a journey where barriers seem to slow you down, pause for a moment and go back to your “why.” It is when there is an unbreakable connection to the “what” and the “why” that you will realize unparalleled success.

When all is said and done, barriers that come your way will fall by the wayside and success will be yours to be had when you have a powerful “why.”
