8 Things to Start & Stop Doing In Your 20's

Your 20’s are some of the most important years in your life. You’ll experience that transition into the real world after college, landing that first big girl job, or to living on your own for the first time! It can definitely be a whirlwind at times, but your 20’s should be your selfish years! It is a time to focus on you and grow into the woman you always envisioned yourself into becoming!

1. Stop: Comparing Yourself to Others

The second you do this, you automatically set yourself up for disappointment. With everything going on in the media, it can sometimes be difficult to not compare yourself to every girl you see. It’s important to have a strong realization of the kind of woman you are and note that competing with others should not be your motivation to be better. Once you are able to love yourself and put yourself first, you will be able to focus on what really matters in life.

2. Stop: Waiting For The Door to Open, Create Your Own Knock

Instead of waiting for the opportunity to arise, create opportunities for yourself! Sometimes waiting for the right or perfect opportunity can lead you in the opposite direction. It’s important to be proactive and go after what you want in life. You should be doing everything you can to increase your brand. Any company will be impressed with your effort to work for their company if you go above and beyond the norm. They may even create a position if they believe in you.

3. Stop: Being Comfortable

This is sometimes easier said than done. This holds true to pushing yourself in the gym and going for that extra mile, or to staying in a position you are more than qualified for because of the security. They say that change and success begins at the end of your comfort zone. Take a chance and experience what it feels like to step out of your comfort zone. You never know what you’ll discover.

4. Stop: Saying “Just” or “Sorry” All The Time

Many women are guilty of this, including myself. Do you ever find yourself saying, “I just wanted to let you know…” or “Sorry” in situations where you can simply say excuse me? Unfortunately this is communicated on a daily basis for some women either by verbal conversations or via email. This tends to be a habit hard to break for many of us. It implies a passive voice and even lack of confidence in certain cases. Eliminating these two words can help to improve your overall verbal and written communication skills.

5. Start: Traveling More Often

Travel, travel, travel! Travel alone, travel with your significant other, family, or best friend. There is an immense amount of information to learn and cities to get lost or fall in love with. It will seem like life is moving by fast in your 20’s, so it’s best to create those memories while you can!

6. Start: Taking Care of Your Body

Goodbye to those college days filled with all nighters, ramen noodles, and other foods that did not do your body any good. You only have one body and it’s definitely easier to take better care of it while you’re young. Get a gym membership or try a new fitness class in your area. Follow fierce fitness women on social media for femspiration! Eat fresh fruit like blueberries or grapefruit that are great for your heart and foods packed with fiber such as avocadoes or beans. Small changes each day can make a huge difference in the long run.

7. Start: Investing in Quality Items

This one may seem tough, especially if you are a recent college grad on a budget, but your 20’s is the best time to invest more. Don’t be cheap and settle for products or food lacking in quality or taste. It’s okay to splurge on the little things once in awhile. Quality over quantity can go a long way at the end of the day.

8. Start: Building Relationships

These relationships include ones with family, friends, mentors, coworkers, and new acquaintances. It can be difficult to maintain most relationships throughout your lifetime. Friends you thought you would keep in contact with since high school no longer play a strong role in your life. This is totally fine. People change over time, you can’t expect someone to be the same person they were a year ago. Embrace the change and build relationships with those important to you. Surround yourself with individuals who want to see you grow and succeed and who are just as motivated to pursue their aspirations as you are.
