Fierce Five: Inspirational New Music From Five Strong Women

< back to blog home

Leona Lewis

Summer is in full swing and nothing gets me up and feeling like conquering the world like excellent, positive music. There are many talented feminists that have already been embraced in the mainstream music scene like Beyonce and Taylor Swift. If you’re looking to add to your list of fave new artists, here’s a great place to start with these five recent songs that are looking for a home on your music player of choice.

Little Boots – “No Pressure”

British electro-pop singer Little Boots (real name: Victoria Hesketh) moonlights as a DJ. She’s still quite underground here in the States, but some of her previous albums have been glorified hits in her native UK. Her latest album, Working Girl, will be released in a few weeks and “No Pressure” is the latest single released from the upcoming set. The driving beat, 1990’s dance sound, and uplifting lyrics are the perfect combination to keep you moving and grooving.

Tori Kelly – “Unbreakable Smile”

California native Tori Kelly is just 22 years old but already has a lifetime of experience as a singer-songwriter. After an unsuccessful run with ‘American Idol’ in 2010, she continued to record and release new music, cultivating a strong fanbase through social media and YouTube. By the end of 2013, she bended the ear of high-profile music manager Scooter Braun (Carly Rae Jepsen, Justin Bieber), gained a record deal with a major label, and released a charity single for Feeding America to help end child hunger. Her debut full-length album, Unbreakable Smile, was released this past month and its title track is filled with lyrics to inspire, especially for her younger, female fanbase.

Zara Larsson – “Lush Life”

A bonafide popstar in her home country of Sweden, Zara Larsson rose to fame by appearing on a music reality competition show there in 2007 when she was just ten years old. At the show’s finale, she performed Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” and was declared the victor. Now nearly ten years later, Zara (now 17) has released her first EP in the US called Uncover (which includes four of her previous singles in Sweden, three of them top ten hits) and a brand new single called “Lush Life” about living for yourself and being in the moment.

Alexandra Stan & Inna – “We Wanna” (feat. Daddy Yankee)

Taking a page out of Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj’s “Bang Bang” handbook, Romanian popstars Alexandra Stan (who had a global hit in 2011 with “Mr. Saxobeat”) and Inna joined forces this past month with the genre-bending dance song “We Wanna”. The song also features reggaeton heavyweight rapper Daddy Yankee and is building buzz all over the world. Featuring an ever-popular saxophone backbeat, the chorus is super catchy and fun to dance to.

Leona Lewis – “Fire Under My Feet”

Forever known as the first female winner of the UK’s ‘X-Factor’ music reality competition, Leona Lewis had secured her place in music history thanks to her strong set of pipes and catchy songs. Her latest, “Fire Under My Feet”, is more upbeat than her previous hits (the most famous: “Bleeding Love”, a #1 hit here in the US) and in this case, it’s quite refreshing. The walking bassline beat makes you want to snap your fingers and the lyrics empower you to fan the flames of your creative drive to succeed.
