What do I stand for?

What do I stand for?

I recently heard a cover band play the song “Some Nights,” written by the band Fun, and I fell in love with the song all over again. For some reason that night I completely connected with the music and started to better understand the meaning behind the song.

I’m not going to dive into each specific verse, but the main gist of the song is that he’s experiencing the highs and lows of life, and finding that it’s not easy. Along the way to stardom he has ups and he has downs, and sometimes gets confused about what he wants, what he stands for and where his life is going.

I feel like this is a song that a lot of people can relate to. I think it’s safe to say that many of us experience the same roller coaster of emotions in our own lives. It’s very difficult to always keep a positive outlook and not let your emotions get the best of you. Using mindfulness is one way to try and create an inner peace, so that when the trials and tribulations of everyday life cause uncertainty and uneasiness, you’re able stay grounded.

Do you ever feel like you’re trying hard to do everything right and you’re heading down a smooth path, but then all of a sudden your own emotions, people or external factors disrupt that journey? I think it’s happened to all of us at one time or another. And while it’s not fun, all of us have the capability to manage these hiccups, overcome challenges and turn setbacks into opportunities, if we just believe in ourselves. Mindfulness is about accepting what is and trusting that you have control over what happens next.

It’s also important to remember that some days and nights are going to be rough, and others will be amazing. Learn to ride the waves and get past self-doubt, because doing this will allow you to find peace and go on stronger than before. The song wraps up confessing that sometimes good things come of bad situations and that if you keep going, although it won’t be perfect, you’ll eventually figure it out and things will turn out okay.
