How to Start a Virtual Career

< back to blog home

Young Woman at Computer

The best thing about having a virtual career is that I get to work in my pajamas!

No, not really…

The truth? The best thing for me is I get to balance family and work. I also love having the freedom to work wherever I want.

In 2009, I started as a traditional data analyst in my hometown in the Philippines, then I found out my sister was working online and was intrigued to find out more.  That was my first encounter with the world of working virtually online and I didn’t believe it could really be true – that was until I received my first salary.

I resigned from my ‘day job’ immediately and the rest is history!

In the beginning finding clients, or clients finding me was difficult.  To work virtually, you have to work your way up, build references, skills and confidence over time.

However, perseverance pays!

My first job was transcription work, which was not my cup of tea.  But, you learn what works for you and focus on developing your strengths. If you find a niche where you can make a difference and enjoy your work, you will be happy and so will your clients. With a two-year-old son, I worked hard after realizing my first virtual job wasn’t right for me, and landed another job. That job led to more clients, some of whom I still work for today.!

The best advice I can give to someone just starting out is to have patience and build network. Every virtual entrepreneur started right where you are so don’t give up!  Learn new things and learn from your clients.

This is one of my favorite quotes:  Don’t be afraid to take time to learn. It’s good to work for other people. I worked for others for 20 years. They paid me to learn. – Vera Wang

I’ll also share you tips on how I work productively :

  1. Use tools.

I use tools like Evernote to take note of important information and Dropbox to access files from clients. I also lists all my tasks in Asana wherein I can add a due date and cross off tasks that I’ve completed.

  1. Avoid multi-tasking

It’s true that when you try to do everything at once, you won’t get anything done. So I don’t recommend multi-tasking. Not just in running errands but also in work. Prioritize tasks that are more important or easier and then work on the difficult tasks.

  1. Schedule a 15-30 minute break

Since we work from home, all we do is sit in front of computer all day. It may not be as tiring as standing, but 15-30 minutes break prevents a mega headache plus it relaxes the mind and eyes. Trust me, it helps 🙂

  1. Minimize distractions

Yes, social media 🙂 Only check your personal social media accounts twice a day on your break.
